CHARLES HARMON (1859-1936) listed California art early still life painting

Oil on canvas still life of peaches and compote in the East Coast style of the latter part of the 19th century, 21" by 27", presently unframed, signed at lower left "C H Harmon" and dated what appears to be 1880 (or, 1880 something, difficult to read last digit). This is a skillful still life in the tradition of eastern masters like the Ream's, or members of the so-called Fall River School. The table appears to be Eastlake Victorian, with its marble top. This is a very impressionistic work, when one takes the time to study the luscious depiction of the peaches especially, and there are delicate colored reflections on the knife, and so forth. Harmon was best known for his Northern California landscapes and coastal scenes. According to Hughes he was Ohio born and was in San Jose as a young boy. He was a self taught artist and Hughes states that he began sketching in 1883; so this must be a very early work of the artist, who went on to become a very well known painter in California. This painting is in very good condition, with varnish that seems to attract a pesky dust layer, detracting from the photos. There are one or two tiny pin point paint losses that can be easily touched up, but note that the white spots are sun reflecting on the varnish. There is a dimple at upper left field and there's a chalky foreign substance above and to the left of the signature. I have a frame for this somewhere but seem to have lost track of it, although as I recall it wasn't particularly exciting. Email me for more photos. SEE HUNDREDS OF WORKS IN MY SHOP CURRENTLY.
