BERTHA CORSON DAY BATES (1875-1968) still life painting, illustrator, student of Howard Pyle

Oil on board floral still life, 13 1/4" by 10 1/4" with white inexpensive frame, signed "B C Bates" at lower right, and bearing a Washington, D.C. framing sticker on the reverse. The artist was a student of the important illustrator Howard Pyle. She exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy around the turn of the century and was also associated with the Drexel Institute and the Brandywine School. She was a friend of Maxfield Parrish and was a keen collector of posters. After her death, her papers were deposited at the Helen Farr Sloan library at the Delaware Art Museum.
