WILLIAM SAMUEL SCHWARTZ (1896-1977) Illinois important Midwest artist ink drawing original
Ink and marker drawing on paper showing a stooped female figure on a street, 10 1/8" by 6 1/2" inside the mat (16 1/4" by 12" as framed), signed at lower left center by important WPA and American Scene artist WILLIAM SAMUEL SCHWARTZ (1896-1977). Schwartz's major oils sell for over $25,000 at auctions. His works are included in major museums and are handled by numerous prestigious galleries nationwide. This sketch probably dates to the post war period. There is considerable pathos and drama in a relatively simple sketch, attesting to the powers of the artist. Schwartz was born in Russia, came to the US in 1913, studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, and subsequently became a leading figure in the WPA and American modernist movements. Still associated primarily with the Midwest, his works are often handled today by Treadway and Wright 20th Century Auctions in Chicago. Shipping wizard figures are guesstimates.
