JOHN WILLIAM HILTON (1904-1983) plein air California art fine desert landscape painting

Oil on canvasboard landscape of desert mountains and scrubby vegetation, 12" by 16" (and likely original framing 2 3/4" on a side), signed in the typical incised manner by the noted California desert painter, JOHN WILLIAM HILTON (1904-1983). This is a very typical work of the artist, something of a Renaissance man of many talents. Hilton was born in North Dakota. As a young man he traveled extensively in China with his missionary parents. He moved to Los Angeles in 1918, working for a gem company. Beginning in the 1930's he operated a curio and gem shop in the Southern California desert near a date products shop, attracting travelers and tourists. At this point he began to paint, Fred Chisnall one of his teachers. Hilton's style evolved as he befriended the likes of Nicolai Fechin, Maynard Dixon, Jimmy Swinnerton, and Clyde Forsythe. From the 1940's through the 1960's, he also illustrated some books, and wrote several books on how to paint the desert ("Hilton Paints the Desert"). Hilton's first solo exposition was in Palm Springs in 1935. He was a resident of Twentynine Palms for most of his life, maintaining a second residence in Maui, Hawaii the last ten years. The artist is included in many important summaries of western and California painting. His works sell regularly at auctions around the nation, and they are often sold through John Moran and Bonhams in California. This painting is in excellent, original condition and is ready for immediate display. Shipping wizard figures are guesstimates. SEE HUNDREDS OF PAINTINGS, DRAWINGS AND PRINTS NOW IN MY SHOP.
