Watercolor on paper painting of green hills in the spring or winter, their tops entering low cloud, 15" by 21" (24" by 30" in circa 1950's or 1960's frame), signed at lower left by listed California artist STANFORD STEVENS (1897-1974). This is a very competently executed painting of what I imagine is a California landscape turning green after winter and spring rains. Stevens painted in Mexico as well, so conceivably this could be a scene from that country. Born in Vermont, Harvard graduate Stevens studied in Paris at the Academie Julian and in New York under George Pierce Ennis and Guy Pene DuBois. By 1940 Stevens was a resident of Carmel, where he became an active member of the artistic community in the Monterey Peninsula area. In 1962 he moved to Mexico, painting around the historic city of Guanajuato. Stevens also painted in Nantucket, as well as Arizona desert landscapes. This watercolor is in excellent condition with fresh colors.
