Very antique drawing of a building, maybe a hotel/drinking establishment combination, large for its time and place, dominating a street scene filled with a number of tiny yet interesting figures, including a drummer at right; two horses; and even a dog. This work, apparently unsigned, measures 9 1/4" by 13 3/8". The artist used a soft paper and some kind of gouache or tempera, which allowed him to show fine detail, as well as a light pastel touch in the sky. The sign over the door of the establishment reads in two languages "Brasserie" and "Bierbrauerei", (and a reverse side bit of adhering printing is in French), so, I am thinking that this scene might be in a geographical location such as Alsace, (Strasbourg area, the German-French border), where the cultures merge. Also, on the reverse are the remains of some old printing, a few French words visible. The date I estimate as 1850, but judging from the clothing of some of the figures, it could be earlier......though, I think, not much later. The reverse handwritten label is difficult to read, it being in German script, but a wild guess is that it reads "Unser ehemaligen Haus von deinem Bruder Jacob gemacht" (our former house, made by your brother Jacob). I would welcome anyone's more accurate reading of this script/translation. The rare drawing, over 150 years old, is a survivor. Obviously it has considerable condition issues and is offered in as-is condition.....these issues including folds and creases, scuffs, long tears, some taped on the reverse side....yet, despite these problems, it maintains its collectability and interest. The present simple mid 20th century frame is available at no extra charge, though the art should likely be reframed with a proper mat and so forth. Take the time to study the activity depicted in the scene.
