Etching of a Florida river landscape, titled at lower left margin "Peace on the Anclote", (actually misspelled on the reverse side official label as "Amelote"), and pencil signed at lower right and dated '37 by listed artist WALTER RONALD LOCKE (1883-1949). The Anclote river is just north of the Tarpon Springs area on Florida's Gulf coast. Locke was born near Boston and passed away in the Tampa Bay area of Florida. He is known principally for his graphic art---etchings of Florida and the Northeast. A member of the Society of American Etchers and the Brooklyn Society of Etchers, Locke was a student of Alfred Hutty and Louis Kronberg. This print, out of a total edition of 250, bears strong resemblance to works by Hutty. The condition is original as found, as the work has not been opened and the original Associated American Artists label is still affixed to the reverse, as well as an old 1940's framing label from Berkeley, California. The old mat has some mottled discoloration and could stand to be replaced with acid-free materials. Measurements are 9 3/4" by 12 1/2" inside that mat and 14 1/4" by 18 1/4" in the original black strip frame. Overall this is a fine southern print by a highly underrated artist; were this by Hutty the price would be several times higher.
