This is an example of the rare and desirable Currier print "Woodcock Shooting", 1852, measuring 14 1/2" by 19 1/2" inside the mat, 20 1/4" by 25" as framed. Some of these are offered in fine print shops to $4,000 if in excellent condition. This one at first glance appears to be one of those---the print looks to the unaided eye to be in truly excellent condition---but upon closer examination, one can see that it has suffered major abuse in its lifetime, unusual even by the standards of abuse to which Currier and Ives prints have been exposed. Apparently, someone in the past trimmed this to the very edges of the image, removing completely all margins and text, perhaps because they were hopelessly damaged. Then, the clever restorer pasted this down on top of a creamy board, and HAND WROTE all the text, including the title, the "Lith. by N. Currier", the "From Nature and on Stone by F. F. Palmer"----all of it. The restorer copied the original text printing so faithfully that only with a loupe or glass can one tell that it is indeed ink and entirely hand written. Truly, it was an heroic effort and quite impressive in and of itself. Obviously, to the advanced collector, the print is seriously compromised, but the actual image is all there and hand colors are still rich and fresh. At top center edge, extreme lower left corner, and above the date at lower center, it appears that small pieces have been reattached after perhaps having been cut, or broken off when brittle. This is hard to photograph but I will give it a try. While these flaws might deter the purist, the casual collector will find the print to be beautiful and still collectable.
