Unusually fresh and well preserved watercolor on paper painting of a pond in a wooded area, spring wildflowers in the foreground, 13 3/4" by 19 1/2" inside the mat, 23 1/2" by 29" as framed, signed at lower right and dated there 1908 by the noted New England artist and teacher HENRY WEBSTER RICE (1853-1934). Rice was born in Maine, the son of a carriage maker. A pupil of Ross Sterling Turner, he went on to become a much beloved watercolorist and instructor. Rice was a member of the Boston Society of Watercolor Painters, and the Guild of Boston Artists. Between 1888 and 1907 he exhibited at the Boston Art Club. In the course of his life he also exhibited at the American Watercolor Society, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Beginning in 1911 and extending through the last year of his life, Rice traveled to Bermuda, painting there. Those Bermuda works are a particularly sought after part of his oeuvre today. Rice painted a lot of scenes in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, as well as in the Monadnock region of southern New Hampshire, leading him to be included in the "White Mountain Art and Artists" book. Scenes of eastern Massachusetts are appear in the marketplace. Notably, Rice's paintings were sold through the prestigious Vose Gallery in Boston. Today Henry Rice works are included in such museum collections as the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland, Maine; and the Portland (Me.) Museum of Art. This example is over 100 years old, but it appears to have been created yesterday. The colors are fresh and unfaded, the paper not at all browned as is so often the case with old watercolors. Evidently it has been a treasured possession and has been well cared for. The frame is modern and in good condition. SEE HUNDREDS OF OTHER WORKS OF ART NOW IN MY SHOP.
