Watercolor on paper portrait of a Native American indian, in the vignetted style of renowned Montana artist Edgar Paxson (1852-1919), the oval measuring 15" by 11". The work is signed at lower right by the portrait "E E Reynolds" and is dated there 1924. I have not been able to locate a listing for the artist, but his or her style is strongly reminiscent of that of Paxson. Very faintly below the portrait, nearly invisible unless one pays close attention, is written in pencil "Arlee Montana". Arlee is a small town in a scenic area of northwestern Montana between Missoula and Kalispell; it is the southern entrance to the Flathead Indian Reservation. Perhaps this came home with an early day tourist back in the 1920's. There is a little water stain at right edge and a foxing mark or two at bottom, but these are not major issues in the context of the work and its age. Shipping wizard figures are guesstimates.
