Watercolor on paper painting of a tree on a bluff by a sandy shore of an estuary or lake, 5 1/2" by 3 1/2" (8 1/2" by 7" in attractive gilt frame), signed at lower left by the noted French 19th century painter, GEORGES BECKER (c. 1845-1909). Becker apparently did not leave behind too many works, but those that have survived leave little doubt as to the talents he possessed. One especially fine history painting, depicting in glorious detail the Coronation of Alexander III and Maria Fyodorovna, resides on a museum wall in St. Petersburg (a book title indicates that Becker spent some time in Russia). The present work would make for a nice addition to a less demanding spot, such as a small wall on a landing. .
