Pastel on paper floral still life, 18 1/4" by 15 1/4" as framed, signed at lower left "Bower" in a slightly flowing 19th century hand. This is a work by the American mid nineteenth century pastel artist JOHN S. BOWER. Bower's works of fruit, often depicted sitting on the ground, are commonly seen in the northeastern states, as he is apparently most closely associated with Massachusetts. In the past I have owned and sold a number of the works, (and see several other examples in my shop currently), and most have been still life, though I once owned a winter landscape scene with small figures. This example is in excellent condition and is ready for the wall. The true color of the background is more towards the grayish side, as suggested by the first image---for some reason the later photos show a greenish tint.
