NESTOR FRUGE (1916-) New Orleans Louisiana art original watercolor painting
For the collector of New Orleans art, here is an attractive work by the noted artist NESTOR FRUGE (1916-) (one of two in my shop, the other an early 1951 example). From what I have seen on the net, this icon of the New Orleans tourist scene continues to paint well into his nineties. Fruge was Louisiana born, and in the course of a long life has worked in Paris and Mexico as well. He established the Fruge Academy of Art between 1949 and 1952, when he was only in his thirties, and it would have been during this very early period that he created this piece showing what I believe is Pirate's Alley in New Orleans French Quarter. I have seen a number of Fruge's works, mostly in watercolor, though oils occasionally surface, and his quality and technique is remarkably stable over a period of more than 50 years. New Orleans auction houses frequently include the artist's works in their sales. The piece measures 15 3/4" by 12" inside the mat (and 19" by 15 1/4" as framed), and it is in remarkably fine condition. See the net for more information on this New Orleans institution.
