This is an original drawing in charcoal and watercolor, by the well listed French artist LUCIEN PHILIPPE MORETTI (1922-2000), the subject a young boy, 25 1/2" by 19 1/2", unframed. It is signed by the artist at lower right, dated 54, and the place where it was drawn is also present (the "Place du Tertre", in the heart of Montmartre's artist district). Moretti was schooled in art in the late 1940's and by the 1950's was haunting Montmartre, a keen observer of all the humanity flooding the area in the post-war years. He was an avid sketcher, mostly of figures, and the scene provided him with endless artistic inspiration. The year 1954 seems to have been a productive one as many drawings bear that date. He lived near the famous Lapin Agile made famous by Maurice Utrillo and countless other art luminaries, and soaked in the area's art history, later moving to Normandy, and then to other locations in the Paris area. Today we are left with a large body of work in oil, drawings, and prints. The oils, many of them very highly finished and accomplished works, have reached five figures at French auctions. The expressive drawings have remained affordable. Moretti began to exhibit his works in Europe and in the early 1970's in the United States. By the mid 70's his work was shown at the prestigious Galerie Petrides in Paris. CONDITION: The drawing, before it came into my possession, had an unfortunate run-in with a cat, which managed to tear the upper area around and including the boy's head. No paper is missing and I'm sure it could be repaired. If left flat, the tears are not immediately visible; in a photo I have deliberately raised up the paper to show the damage.
