Mixed media ink and watercolor vintage drawing of a Spanish trubadour
Black ink, red watercolor and white gouache drawing, unsigned, 22 1/2" by 15", unsigned, the figure playing a mandolin or lute, wearing poofy medieval-style pantaloons, and sporting a Dali-esque moustache. The drawing definitely has some age, maybe circa mid century. The camera somewhat overstates the color difference between top (more brownish) and bottom (less browned) half; I can't explain the variation. There are some edge flaws (short tears, old nail cuts) and at upper left there is some discoloration appearing as roughly spherical light areas, but the busy composition distracts the eye and minimizes them. The artist was talented and created a nice little drawing. It has been suggested that this might be a work by the Russian/French/American artist Eugene Berman (1899-1972), known for his stage designing; but without a signature this would be difficult to prove.
