PAOLO RISSONE (1925-) rare modernist figural painting by well exhibited Italian artist associated with Brazil

This is a rare and desirable 35" by 23" work, signed at lower right and dated there either "60" or a year in the 1950's (difficult to determine) by an artist born in Sicily in 1925, who moved to Brazil in 1948, working there for twenty years and establishing himself there at the highest levels of the Brazilian art world in the 1950's and 1960's. PAOLO RISSONE (1925-) created very beautiful modernist works reflective of the period, when modernism was seeing some of its most creative and productive years. His paintings and drawings feature figures and still life and whimsical dreamy shapes, all executed by a sure and talented hand. Rissone lived in Santos and Rio de Janeiro. Beginning about 1950, his works were appearing in the fine art shows and exhibitions in Brazil and Europe, including the Sao Paulo Biennale (many times) and the Venice Biennale of 1954. In fact, he is considered to have been among the group who founded the Biennale in Sao Paulo. His name appears in exhibitions alongside that of many international masters of the period. By 1968 he had moved permanently back to Italy. Oddly, Rissone's works do not appear to have been extensively auctioned, but the exhibition record in South America and Europe is most impressive. There are few records of his paintings having appeared, but that does not diminish the quality of the work. In 2013, the Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of Sao Paulo will include Rissone's work in its definitive exhibition of works of paintings which appeared in the Biennales between 1951 and 1963; other artists to be included are such well-known names as Prunella Clough, Armando Morales, Ralph Du Casse, Yozo Yamaguchi, Otto Pankok, and William Scott. If one googles his name and "Images", one can see other examples of the paintings by this fine self-taught artist. The present example is a good size, measuring 35" by 23", and is painted on board. Condition is excellent overall though I note two miniscule unexplained tack holes in the board at about knee level. The frame's reddish wood is complementary to the browns in the image.
