By a listed Austrian-born California painter is this large oil on canvas, 34" by 40" (39" by 45" as framed), signed at lower left and dated there "40", the subject the classic, famous, and oft-painted historical Chateau de Chillon of Lord Byron fame, on the shores of Lake Geneva in western Switzerland. The Dents du Midi snow capped peaks rise in the distance, as swans ply the waters and fishermen in a boat at right complete the scene. This is a colorful painting by VICTOR H. NICKOL (1884-1956). Nickol is listed in Hughes' dictionary of California artists, but there seems to be otherwise little biographical information available. He was born in Austria and was in New York City by 1910, and in the Laguna Beach art colony in Southern California by 1940. He was an illustrator of a popular book on horseback riding. Apparently he died in 1956, as there is on line a photo of his grave stone in a Ventura cemetery. This painting covers a lot of wall and would add color and depth to a room. The condition is generally excellent, with just a light scratch/scuff at upper right and a very small area of fine patterned paint loss in sky. Also there's 75 years of discolored varnish and plain grime, so, while you wouldn't have to do so, a cleaning by a professional would be very attractive proposition.
