G. SHERMAN contemporary impressionist painting of classic Paris street scene by popular auction level artist

Oil on canvas scene of a central Parisian square in the late 19th century, complete with fountains, horse drawn carriages, and figures, on a rainy day, 24" by 36" (31" by 43" framed), signed at lower left by the popular contemporary painter who signs as "G. SHERMAN". The scene is reminiscent of Caillebotte's famous scenes of Paris, or perhaps of a number of other impressionist artists who favored the always popular subject matter. Paintings signed by this artist were formerly listed in auction catalogs by some of the biggest houses in America as being by the listed artist Gail Corbett Sherman, who died in 1953, despite the canvas and so forth being very obviously by a contemporary late 20th century painter. Nevertheless works by this mysterious artist have achieved considerable popularity on their own merits, one having sold at Sotheby's for over $13,000, and others in the low to mid thousands quite commonly, based on the rich impressionist technique and classic subject matter. This example is in excellent condition and it is a lovely work that is ready for the wall. I would guess it to have been executed in the late 1960's or perhaps early 1970's.
