THEODORE TOBIASSE (1927-) pencil signed limited lithograph by important School of Paris Jewish modernist artist
This is a pencil signed print, numbered "AP 2/10" at lower center, and titled in the plate "Agar et Ismael Chasses par Abraham", by the important living Jewish artist THEO(DORE) TOBIASSE (1927-). Tobiasse has often been compared to Chagall and Picasso, with his figure-based, personal, dreamy interpretations of themes like the exploration of one's heritage, exile, and Biblical and erotic fantasy. He was born in Israel, moved briefly to his parents' native Lithuania, and was in Paris by 1931. During the Nazi occupation his entire family remained in hiding in a dim apartment where they barely evaded discovery. After liberation, he began to blossom artistically, and by 1960 was exhibiting in France. Thereafter followed worldwide appreciation of his art by collectors of Judaica on many continents. Today paintings can sell at major auctions for more than $50,000. Many lithographs were made and widely distributed, allowing thousands to enjoy the opportunity to own his work. This example measures 26 3/8" by 20" (33 3/4" by 27 1/4" framed). It is signed in pencil at lower right by the artist. Condition is excellent, with rich color.
