HUGO A. POSSNER (1859-1933) oil painting of antelope grazing in a high mountain landscape

Oil on board painting of a herd of antelope grazing in a lush high mountain meadow, 11 3/4" by 17 1/2" (15" by 21" framed), signed at lower left corner by the artist, HUGO A. POSSNER (1859-1933) and dated there "30". Possner was born in Prussia but was painting bar murals in New Haven, Connecticut as early as 1880, going on to instructing in painting at Provincetown, Massachusetts. By 1912 he was in Los Angeles, where he was known as a portraitist and commercial painter. Works appear at auction with some frequency. Some of his works have a strange, artificial stillness to them, as if time has stopped. This herd of animals peers at the viewer, engaging him directly. Condition is excellent and this is ready for the wall. .
