American folk art dog painting of a Saint Bernard circa 1880
This is a folky painting of someone's favorite St. Bernard dog, circa 1870's or 1880's. Measuring 21" by 16" on the original very old stretchers and 26" by 21" in its newish gold frame, the painting is a sweet and classic rendition of a treasured pet of the Victorian era. Vintage dog paintings are very popular and collectable. This one has evidence of its great age, with stretcher bar show-through, a little inpainting at bottom, and a few pressure dimples and near-tears. These notwithstanding, the piece is very appealing.
