Oil on board painting of pink roses against a neutral backdrop, 21" by 12 1/4" (25" by 16" framed), signed at lower left and dated there 1934, when the artist, SAMUEL S. NICOLINI (1855-) was nearly 80 years old. Although this work was purchased in Salem, Massachusetts, the artist is associated with San Francisco and California, according to the Hughes dictionary listing, which gives his birth date, birth place, Yugoslavia, and the years he was active in San Francisco (the late 1920's through the outbreak of World War II). This piece, being dated 1934, would fall squarely into that San Francisco period, but it isn't telling us exactly where it was created. The detail of the roses and shiny leaves is fabulous, and the painter was obviously on top of his game at this period of his life. On the reverse is written (very hard to read) "Rose painting by Nicolini 1934". According to the Hughes listing, Nicolini's works are "rare"; and it is thought the artist returned to Europe at the end of his life. .
