Oil on the smooth side of a masonite board, 16" by 12" plus narrow simple wood frame, signed at lower right with the incised signature of the noted Northern California artist GENEVE RIXFORD SARGEANT (1868-1957). This is a boldly impressionistic work showing a thicket of bushes and trees at the edge of a clearing. Sargeant was born in San Francisco, and was fortunate to have studied early in her life under a variety of notable or important teachers: Virgil Williams, Emil Carlsen, in California; and then William Merritt Chase and Andre Lhote. After time in New York and Chicago, she returned home to California, living in Monterey and then Southern California for some years. By the mid 1920's she was studying in Paris under Andrew Lhote. For the next 30 years Sargeant was very active in the art scene in Northern California. Portraits, still life, and landscape by her hand appear frequently at auction. She exhibited widely from the teens through about 1940. Museum collections include her works. This painting is in excellent condition. A wider, more elaborate frame would strengthen the visual impact of this lovely painting. .
