This is a superb charcoal on paper drawing laid to an old board, signed at upper right (look carefully to find it, in the final photo) Ernest W. Scanes. The paper measures 17" by 22". I would date the work to the 1930's or 1940's, judging from the excellent WPA regionalism style. Indeed, this greatly resembles a number of "AAA" (Associated American Artists) lithograph prints of the period. Scanes is best known as a Michigan artist, certainly a Midwest artist, but also, due to his illustration of books and ads, he is known as an illustrator as well. The drawing has some condition issues in the image area: there is moderate foxing and a few abrasions resulting in missing paper, showing as white areas. However, in the overall scheme of the drawing, I don't find these to be overpowering. Email me for more detailed photos of the condition matters. I HAVE LISTED A SECOND WORK, IN WATERCOLOR, showing skiers and dated 1966. A relative of the artist, a grandson, I believe, lives in the Los Angeles area and I believe he dispersed a few portfolios of drawings, which surface regularly in this area.
