This large print is an etching on paper in dark brown ink, and a heavily inked example at that, the subject apparently "Turkish Cemetery", according to a pencil notation in the upper left margin. Measuring 19" by 20" inside the mat (28" by 28 1/2" as framed), the work is signed in pencil in margin at lower left with the distinctive signature of the noted English modern art figure FRANK BRANGWYN (1867-1956). Brangwyn was a unique figure in British art, not easily categorized stylistically, but today his contribution to that art is unquestioned. Born in Belgium, he was in London by an early age, where he largely taught himself to draw. During the 1880's he worked in the studio of William Morris of the Arts and Crafts movement, and by 1890 was entering paintings in salons and exhibitions, garnering much attention. Today he is regarded as a major British impressionist artist, and oils sell for very large sums at London auctions. Brangwyn is also noted for his etchings, of which there are more than 300 known subjects. CONDITION: I opened this up and discovered that the print is NOT laid down on a board; it was affixed at top edge with tape. I have cut the tape and freed the print from the mat. There is moderate age toning and considerable heavy foxing/brownish patchy discoloration of the paper in all the margins (and especially at lower right), as shown; the image itself seems to be clean. Also the work has evidently been in this frame, with this glass, for a considerable length of time, and as a result the photos show some heavy "ghost" offset of the raised ink on the glass; the offset is simply a whitish, ghostly mirror image of the design. This effect is especially pronounced in this example but such offset to the glass is not unusual in prints. Shipping wizard figures are guesstimates.
