This is a fine patinated bronze sculpture of a Hooded Merganser duck, titled "Preening", executed in 1978, numbered 41/50 examples, and signed by the noted western American artist VERYL GOODNIGHT (1947-). Extreme dimensions of the work are 9" by 10" by 8" high (including the wood base). Goodnight continues to paint and sculpt from her property in southwestern Colorado. A self-described lover of wildlife from a young age, Goodnight has become a nationally known artist, the works of whom appear in public places, major museums, and fine western American art galleries and auctions. She is held in especially high esteem for her equine sculpture. Her best known work is "The Day the Wall Came Down", a 30' by 18' by 12', seven ton bronze of galloping free horses. This work graces the courtyard of the George Bush Presidential Library courtyard in Texas, and another example of it was given to the people of Germany, where it finds a home at the Allied Museum in Berlin. The massive sculpture of horses running free symbolizes freedom, an apt image for a people who lived for decades in the shadow of the Berlin Wall. Goodnight's major sculptures have sold into mid five figures at auction. Institutions with an example of her work in their collections include the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian, the Gilcrease Museum, Denver Zoo, Brookgreen Gardens, and many others. Goodnight continues to exhibit at major museums and art shows around the nation. See the net for much more information on the artist and her work. Shipping wizard figures are guesstimates.
