This is a mid-life graphic work by the artist, who in the course of a long career has come to be considered among the top tier of 20th century black artists, creating works in printmaking, sculpture, painting and drawing. Works dealing with racial discrimination, class oppression, and African-American genre comprise much of his output. Wilson attended the Museum of Fine Arts School in his native Boston in 1939, studying there with Karl Zerbe who introduced him to German Expressionism and suggested he explore social issues in his art. Later he studied with Fernand Leger in Europe and also in Mexico for a time. Wilson was listed in major works on African-American art by the 1970's. His work is included in the Brooklyn Museum, Carnegie, Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Academy and the Whitney Museum of American Art. He was commissioned to create for the Capitol Rotunda in Washington a sculpture of Dr. Martin Luther King; Coretta Scott King was involved in the selection of the artist. Later in life he has been an educator--a professor of Fine Arts at Boston University, from which he retired in 1986. See the net for much more information on this important artists. Prints have sold at auction into the five figures. This work is in very good condition, with some old mat lines visible in the margins. There is a tiny, shallow depression at upper right within the image area. Generally though the work is very clean and the impression is bold. Shipping wizard figures are guesstimates.
