This is an early to mid nineteenth century American toleware tray, 6" by 8 7/8", still retaining most of its original painted devices. A bit of gilt paint even remains along the rim. There is corrosion, and pitting and wear, as is commonly seen on such old articles, but, that only adds to the appeal. I think this might have been used under a candle holder but I didn't live in that century so can't tell for sure what it might have been used for. Toleware is a favorite of Americana and folk art collectors. Often one encounters small lidded boxes used for storing small articles or papers. See the net for more on the subject.
