Fine watercolor and gouache drawing on paper, 20" by 16 3/4" inside the original gold mat (29" by 25" as framed), the subject a young blue-eyed English beauty seated on a high ledge, an extensive river landscape in the lower right distance. The painting is not apparently signed (not examined out of the original framing) but an ancient handwritten letter dated Feb. 2, 1906, affixed to the backing, on the letterhead of Exchange Art Gallery, Liverpool, declares that the work is, in the opinion of the gallery "the work of Chas. Baxter, many of whose works were exhibited in the Royal Academy 1834-1872." The letter is signed "Thos. Agnew Sons", a prestigious name in fine English art. The drawing is in excellent condition, with fresh colors and no water damage or foxing. Baxter is known today for his portraits and miniatures, generally in oil of young, pretty women of his time. Works appear at auction. The artist, according to the Wikipedia listing, was born in Little Britain, London, in 1809, the son of a book clasp maker. Apprenticed to a bookbinder, he soon drifted into an artistic career. By age 30 he had exhibited at the Royal Academy and joined the Clipstone Street Society, where he mingled with talented artists such as Paul Falconer Poole, William Muller, Edward Duncan, and Frank W. Topham. By 1842 he was a member of the Society of British Artists. Some of Baxter's finest works date to the period between the early 1850's and early 1870's. This example is of an especially attractive subject, compared to others in his oeuvre. The work is in especially original condition; the framing might be original, and even the 1906 letter might have been affixed to the original backing. The frame has considerable edge wear and losses, a number of which were painted over in gold long ago. This is a fine 19th century English watercolor indeed. **ALLOW FOR REFLECTIONS IN SOME IMAGES.** Shipping wizard figures are guesstimates. SEE HUNDREDS OF OTHER WORKS NOW IN MY SHOP.
