ELLEN HENNE GOODALE (1915-1991) oil painting of Alaskan sled dogs in a landscape by listed artist
Here is a painting that a collector of Alaskana might want to add to a collection of Alaska art. One of a number of works by this talented artist that I have owned and offered over the years is this oil on canvasboard, 10" by 8" (17 1/2" by 15 1/2" in its attractive gold frame), signed at lower right with the typical signature "Henne". The landscape with snowy peaks, tall fir trees, a distant Alaskan cache, and sled dog team of huskies with their master, is a typical work by the noted Alaskan painter ELLEN HENNE GOODALE (1915-1991). Goodale, who usually signed "Henne" and is probably best known by that name, came to be a familiar name in Alaskan art of the second half of the century. Born in Seattle, she studied in Pittsburgh and Ohio before returning to the west, where she spent time in Reno and San Francisco with her husband Harvey Goodale, himself a very well known painter of Alaska subject matter. By 1943 the Goodales were back in Alaska, in the panhandle region, before finally settling near Anchorage. Over the next fifty or so years Ellen painted prolifically. The typically encountered work is about this size and on canvasboard, as is this example. She painted caches, mountains, dog teams, auroras, and native Alaskans in native costume, going about their activities like ice fishing. Henne's work is identifiable from a considerable distance. Her blues and whites, it seems to me, are quite distinctive. The artist seems to have used quality materials as most examples appear to be in good condition. This one is ready for the wall. The gold color frame is not terribly expensive but provides a quality look. Shipping wizard figures are guesstimates. SEE HUNDREDS OF OTHER WORKS NOW IN MY SHOP.
