Striking modern painting on masonite panel, signed on the reverse "Kalamaras --72", likely tempera, the image difficult to describe: the viewer appears to be looking out of a green-framed two pane window at a neighboring house with reddish wall, sloping roof line, and a wooden-looking door-like window.......well, it IS difficult to describe. The work measures 19 1/2" by 15 1/2" inside the frame; inside the green outlines of the "window" the size is 14" by 9 3/4". This is by California contemporary artist JOHN ATHAN KALAMARAS (1936-). According to his own website, he was born in Vallejo, in the San Francisco Bay area, was educated at Berkeley, where he received advanced degrees in art and psychology, and then studied in Europe. Kalamaras has had 25 one man gallery shows, and recently, some large works sold at Christie's in New York. Regarding the painting itself, I'm still not really not sure if the area outside the green window outline is painted by the artist or whether it be a spray paint process; I'm still not quite decided. This bears a framer's label from Bergamot Station here in Santa Monica, a cluster of world-renowned galleries in the contemporary art world. I don't know if it was just framed there or whether it was sold by one of those galleries. Condition from normal viewing distance seems excellent, but up closer, no doubt acquired in the course of careless handling, there are a number of scuffs and light scratches and even a water splotch, primarily in that greenish "margin" area. Most are visible only when tilting the art in a certain direction so as to accentuate them. If you're liking the image, don't let them distract you. .
