This is a late 19th or early 20th century oil on canvas copy of a well known painting by one of the towering figures of the Hudson River School, ALBERT BIERSTADT. Unframed, the painting measures 12 1/2" by 19". There is no signature. Note the rich luminosity and the intense cloud effects as day ends. The trees at right are beautifully silhouetted against that red sky, while a waterfall at left and birds at lower left center complete the idyllic scene suggestive of "Manifest Destiny". The original painting was created by Bierstadt in 1864, and Louis Prang made a chromolithograph of the painting in 1868. The famously luminous work was often copied, by persons of various degrees of talent; this copyist I believe had above-average skills. Condition: clean, some minor edge losses especially at lower right, and a pinpoint tiny loss at center right. Put a gilt frame on this and you'll have a "Bierstadt" in your home or office that is a lot more affordable than the original might be. .
