Pastel on paper, 11" by 23 1/2" (15 1/2" by 28" in its original stained oak veneer frame), unsigned, the subject a beautiful still life arrangement including a number of peaches and bananas in front of a tilted bowl or possibly basket. I think the work dates to about the year 1900 give or take a decade or two. Condition is excellent, with just a little pastel dust adhering to the glass. I recall having seen some time ago a photo of an oil of this exact arrangement, the painting being by California listed artist John Califano (1862-1946), but I did not document the image and do not attribute this to Califano. In any event, this could even be a copy of a known Califano painting by an unknown artist. Interestingly on the reverse of the heavy paper is an old rubber stamp, somewhat difficult to read in its entirety (see photo). The stamp is from Paris, but it's difficult to glean more from this clue. Califano did begin his life in Europe, and was known to have created artworks there, but once again it is difficult to take this further. Perhaps more research could determine more.
