THREE oil on canvas paintings, each 6 3/4" by 6 3/4" as framed, all signed "Verne", the subjects the Southern California desert with blooming yucca and barren hills, and two landscapes with trees (at least one probably eucalyptus). These are works by one GLADYS MARIE BAXTER DUCKWORTH (1904-1981). Often the works are erroneously misattributed by online sellers as being by a "Verne Lucinda McCann Gillespie", but Edan Hughes in his dictionary of artists in California has set the record straight. He says the artist was Massachusetts-born, met her husband while living in London until the outbreak of World War II, then returned to Boston and eventually Laguna Hills, California. On the reverses are various original labels, from "Virginia's Gift Shop" at Knott's Berry Place in Buena Park, California, or the standard gold label proclaiming this to be a work by "Verne of Laguna Beach, California". The paintings by this artist, nearly always miniatures, were apparently sold at gift shops in the Knott's Berry Farm amusement park from the 1940's to as late as the 1960's, and as a result, there are a lot of these works, and they have typically strayed far from California in the luggage and handbags of tourists. **CONDITION**: Because the artist typically worked on very thin, unsupported canvas, the works are unfortunately often found ripped. Two of these paintings have irregular tears---a vertical one at the right side and near the signature on the desert scene, and at left in the eucalyptus painting, a horizontal one.** See photos. Sometimes they are successfully taped from the rear if a professional repair is not likely, due to the economics of the situation. I don't normally recommend such "repair" but it might work on thes pieces if carefully done. Shipping wizard figures are approximate. SEE HUNDREDS OF OTHER PAINTINGS, DRAWINGS AND PRINTS IN MY SHOP.
