American 19th century charcoal on paper portrait of a man signed with initials

Charcoal on paper portrait of a middle aged bearded man, circa 1880, 20" by 16", simply framed, signed at lower right with initials "M.J.H.". Thinking this was a work by the major artist Martin Johnson Heade, I sent images to Theodore Stebbins, the Heade expert, who said this was not the work of that artist. So, I offer it here as a decorative work of the nineteenth century. There are some creases in the forehead, in the field on both sides of the head, and a few in the lapel area, and some light paper abrasions at left. Guaranteed an original drawing and not a print. The back side of the paper has a sort of thin canvas look, almost as if the drawing were laid onto a very thin canvas. Shipping wizard figures are guesstimates.
