**ONE OF TWO ORIGINAL WORKS BY THE ARTIST IN MY SHOP**Gouache on a silvery paper, 48" by 19 5/8" and a milky robins-egg light green painted wood narrow frame, signed at lower left by the listed California and Illinois artist MARGO ALEXANDER (1894-1965). This is a whimsical scene of a flowering branch, a bird included in the scene as well. The artist studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and exhibited at the Golden Gate International Exposition in 1939. Subject matter is often whimsical, such as young children in colorful costumes. Prints of her work are commonly encountered, but originals are somewhat more scarce. This is also a larger work than is commonly found. Condition: Over time there has been some drying of the paint which has led to losses; but they are in areas that tend to be overpowered by the overall image. There are losses in the flower clusters, particularly in the yellow and brown of a number of the flowers in the cluster at right. There is a small scrape in the paper above the signature, and other minor scrapes. From a normal viewing distance, these issues do not seem to me to be of major importance; they appear to be almost the artist's creative intent. Ask for more closeup images of the dried loss areas.
