MANUEL ROBBE (1872-1936) important French printmaker desirable Paris scene of Notre Dame at Twilight
Aquatint and etching on paper, 13 1/4" by 18" (20" by 24 1/4" as framed), signed at lower right and numbered "283" at lower left, the subject the world famous Notre Dame de Paris cathedral in central Paris at twilight, seen in the classic southeast view from the banks of the adjacent Seine River. I believe the title of this work is indeed "Notre Dame at Twilight". Robbe was a major French printmaker late in the 19th and early in the 20th century. His subject matter included Paris scenes, which are his most sought after work, and scenes in Brittany, of marketplaces and common folk. Jacques Villon worked with him, and Robbe achieved great success and recognition. He is really known for his prints, rather than original drawings and paintings. Works appear frequently at auction in Europe and America. This example has not been examined out of the frame but it appears to be in very good condition, with just some paper browning. Allow for reflections in some images, and perhaps a little steam that gathered on the inside of the glass at center while I was photographing it in direct sunlight.
