ALFRED BIRDSEY (1912-1996) Bermuda art original watercolor painting with a cubist feeling
This is a rather typical work of the noted Bermudian artist ALFRED BIRDSEY (1912-1996), the full sheet affixed to aboard measuring 18" by 23 1/2". Birdsey was a familiar figure in Bermuda for decades, a prolific artist, the works of whom traveled home with tourists to the island. This would account for the wide distribution of his distinctive work. Today his daughter continues the family tradition, with similar looking paintings being sold to visitors. Birdsey worked in gouache or, occasionally, oil or acrylic on paper. Some works are more detailed than others, some with little color, but all capture the feeling of the unique island landscape of Bermuda. This example is in very good condition, with a 3/4 raised dig in the paper at upper left, and in the white margin areas, it is skinned from the old mat having been removed. To the left of the signature is a vertical 4" tear extending up from the lower margin; it has evidently been repaired at some time in the past. It looks like a paper crease and only at an angle can one see a little sheen to the area where it was fixed. Otherwise the work is in clean condition. Shipping wizard figures are guesstimates.
