WASHBURNE FORSTER (1884-) vintage large oil painting of the Organ Mountains in New Mexico by listed Southwest artist

Oil on canvas measuring 27 3/4" by 34", unframed, the subject a serrated mountain range in an arid landscape, Spanish Bayonet yucca type vegetation amid scattered boulders in the foreground, signed at lower right and dated there 1939 by the listed New Mexican artist WASHBURNE FORSTER (1884-). The white yucca flowers are depicted with heavy impasto, giving them a three dimensional look. The subject is very likely to be the high and prominent Organ Mountains above Las Cruces, NM. Forster (see the askart listing) taught painting for sixty years in the area of Hatch, NM which is on the Rio Grande not far from El Paso, Texas. "Hatch Chilies" are known throughout the southwest for their premium qualities and they are widely used in cooking throughout the region. Forster was known to be painting as late as 1947, according to the listing in Dawdy's Artists of the American West. He was the custodian of Hatch High School. Evidently Forster painted the Grand Canyon as well as I saw an example he created. CONDITION: This painting desperately needs a professional cleaning to remove years of cigarette smoke and other accumulated yellowing grime. You can get an excellent idea of the painting that rests below this gunk by looking at the edges where a frame at one time protected the canvas. Cleaned, this would be a truly beautiful southwestern painting. There is no information on the stretcher or canvas reverse side. Ask for photo of that. Shipping wizard figures are guesstimates.
