JOSEF ISRAELS (1824-1911) pencil signed etching by highly important Dutch 19th century artist

Etching on paper, 7" by 4 3/4" inside the present linen covered mat, (13" by 10" as framed), pencil signed at lower left by the major religious, history and genre painter of the Netherlands, JOSEF ISRAELS (1824-1911). Although the print has not been examined outside the frame, it appears to be in excellent, unusually fresh condition. Affixed to the modern framing paper is a fragment of an old label from a Zurich, Switzerland gallery, "Kunstsalon Wolfsberg", with handwritten reference number, "Rad." (etching), title "Kind in Stuhl" (Child in Chair), and original 380 Francs price. Kunstsalon Wolfsberg is still in business I believe, but most certainly it has been one of Switzerland's most important art galleries. Jozef Israëls was the most important Dutch painter of the 19th century, one of the leading exponents of the Hague school and the most popular artist of his day in the Netherlands. Born in Groningen, he was heading to the rabbinate but precocious skills were noted and he began study with Amsterdam painters. By mid century he had attracted wide notice and went on to become an artist in high demand. He has been compared with Millet for his sensitive, sympathetic, dramatic, romantic views of farm workers and fishermen. Jozef Israëls' works hang in the world's great museums, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the National Gallery in London. His son Isaac Israels went on to become a major painter in his own right. The father's best works sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars at major auctions in Europe, America and elsewhere. See the net for much, much more on Israels' career and place in the history of nineteenth century art. Shipping wizard figures are guesstimates.
