HENRIETTE WYETH (1907-1997) pencil signed limited edition collotype print of wildflowers painting
This is a photographic reproduction commonly called a "collotype", probably dating to the late 1970's or 1980's, numbered 482/490 at lower left, and pencil signed at lower right, by one of the better known American artists of the twentieth century, HENRIETTE WYETH (1907-1997). Wyeth was the daughter of N.C. (Newell) Wyeth, the great American painter and illustrator, and the older sister of famed watercolorist Andrew Wyeth. She never reached the levels of fame, acclaim and recognition attained by her relatives, but art history has carved out a secure place for her. Today major galleries and auction houses handle her fine still life works and sensitive portraits. Wyeth's biography is quite interesting. She was born in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania and while young was taking lessons from her famous father. She attended some art classes in Boston and Philadelphia at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and had exposure to the theatre, which was to leave its mark on her work. By the 1930's she was back taking lessons from her father in Pennsylvania, and it was there that she was to meet the artist Peter Hurd. She eventually married him and moved to southern New Mexico where the couple lived on a ranch near San Patricio. The ranch became a focal point of art and culture in the remote region. Later in life as Wyeth's career bloomed, she was called upon to create portraits of the famous. She outlived Peter Hurd and passed away in 1997, leaving a rich body of work. CONDITION: Not examined out of the frame, which is a quality burl walnut veneer, I believe. All photos were taken through glass that has some non-glare qualities. I would recommend replacing that. The print appears to be in fine condition. Judging from a few layers of address stickers on the reverse, the print has traveled around the nation with its owner(s); Basking Ridge, New Jersey, a New York City suburb; Sebastopol, California (Sonoma County, north of San Francisco); and framing in Santa Barbara in Southern California.
