Oil on canvas, 20" by 14 3/4" (29" by 24" as framed) signed at lower left with the signature of well listed Danish artist NILS H. CHRISTIANSEN (1850-1922), the subject a setting sun behind trees in a thinning forest. The artist seems to have been very interested in depicting the effects of light on landscapes, as many paintings seem to include his trademark round sun or moon somewhere in the sky. The painting has a certain Hudson River school look, what with the trees and luminosity, but this is a Scandinavian work. According to information posted on the net, the source said to be the grandson of the artist, Christiansen was born in Esbjerg, Jutland (Denmark) in the year 1850 and he died in Plaistow, England in 1922. The artist came to England for the Royal Wedding of the Prince of Wales and Princess Alexandria and Queen Victoria gave him a Grace and Favour apartment at Windsor. On September 10, 1887, he married Alice Dickens in York Square, Stepney. He exhibited in the Royal Academy of Copenhagen and also, it is believed, in London galleries, as many works seem to show up today in England. The artist's works are usually of Scandinavian fjord scenes or Epping Forest and Windsor Park. Most works appearing at auction in Europe and America are landscapes. The present painting has some condition issues. There is a white patch on the reverse corresponding to a repaired area, a small loss not far from the signature, stretcher bar show-through at top, and at left edge the canvas has separated at the tacking edge. See photos of these issues, which are certainly repairable by any professional restorer. The old frame, likely the original, has a number of significant losses of gesso. Note the old London artist's materials stencil on the reverse. See the net for images of other works by the artist (including reproductions now made for the market). .
