JOHN GEORGE BROWN (1831-1913) American art etching print titled "Business Neglected"
This is an etching of the year 1884 by the well known American artist JOHN GEORGE BROWN (1831-1913), the subject a young boy playing a flute. This particular print is NOT pencil signed (there was a small edition of pencil signed pieces). Measurements 15" by 11 1/4" (as framed, 18 3/8" by 14 5/8"). Brown was born in England but was in America as a youth. He was a National Academician by the late 1860's, known through the last portion of the 19th century for his sensitive portrayals of society's less fortunate members. Many paintings show shoeshine boys, so Brown came to be known as the "Bootblack Raphael". Other subjects include the mischievous youth and the interactions between the well-to-do and the less well off in late 19th century New York. He was not a printmaker for the most part. This is said on the net to be his only true etching, though engravings of his paintings were made and produced in limited numbers with his signature. See in my shop an example of such an engraving. CONDITION: reasonably good. There is overall browning from successive past matting, as is shown by removing the print and the present overlying mat. For the sake of accuracy I note at lower right a tiny abrasion and at left a tiny white spot. There is old masking tape adhering to the edges around the reverse side.
