Oil on canvas, 14" by 21" (20" by 27" as framed), the subject a landscape near the sunset of a winter day in the Netherlands. Classic elements of the scene include bare trees, billowing gray clouds, a distant windmill, modest waterside homes, small boats, and a figure with her back turned towards the viewer. The painting is signed at lower right with a signature that resembles that of noted Dutch painter EVERT PIETERS (1856-1932), but I am not representing this as a work by that important painter of landscapes, genre and marines, as the quality is just not up to Pieters' standards. Nevertheless, this remains a decorative, pleasing painting of a somber winter sunset. I'd guess it was executed in Pieters' style sometime between the late 1930's and about 1960. CONDITION: There are a few very light abrasions, and some craquelure, especially in the sky, and the painting would benefit from a cleaning. See the photo of the left edge, which gives an idea of how this would brighten if cleaned. The vintage frame has a number of losses and you might wish to replace it.
