Oil on board, 9 1/2" by 7 5/8" and narrow simple vintage wood frame in good condition, signed at lower right "DeT."; without a doubt a painting by noted and prolific Northern California painter RICHARD DETREVILLE (one of two works by the artist in my shop, and one of a number I've owned and sold over the years). Detreville was born in South Carolina in 1864, and by the early years of the new century, he was in Stockton publishing a magazine. Shortly thereafter he was in San Francisco, represented by a gallery. The artist painted Lake Tahoe, the north coast, the Monterey area; missions, forests, and extensive landscapes, but I've also seen unusual subject matter like Ireland and now these flying geese. I believe he was inspired sometimes by printmakers like Currier and Ives, and by other prints. This is not likely his best work---his work could be quite uneven---but I strongly believe it is by Detreville's hand, as he was known to sign like this. Note the vintage handwritten old label adhering to the reverse framing paper, with the words "Canada Geese" in old longhand. .
