Oil on canvas painting of a young ballerina, 50" by 30" (60" by 40" as framed), signed at lower left by noted American painter SAUL SCHARY (1904-1978). This is a large and impressive work that reminds one perhaps of the painting styles of Raphael Soyer, Robert Brackman, or Robert Phillipp. The young dancer is shown in her tights against a plain background that does not distract the viewer from her lovely figure and stance. Schary was born in 1904 in Newark, New Jersey, and was a very visible figure at mid century in the New York and east coast art scene. He was educated at the Art Students League in New York and at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Exhibitions of his work were held at the Art Institute of Chicago, Carnegie, Corcoran, Whitney Museum and elsewhere. Today he is best known for his figural works, including self portraits, but he also painted still life and landscapes, including some abstracted works. Schary was a close friend of the painter Arshile Gorky, and in fact was with him immediately before the latter's suicide in 1948. Seeing as that he Schary was involved in the turbulent New York art scene at mid century, (a friend and acquaintance to many now well known names including Kay Sage, Peter Blume and others), it is rather interesting that his work remained rather traditional, though, with a modern touch. He lived into the late 1970's when he passed away in New Milford, Connecticut. Schary paintings have been sold at auction around the country. Condition: the painting at first appearance is in very good condition, with just a small paint loss at lower right. A closer look reveals a number of irregularities in the canvas surface, including stretcher bar show-through. I've tried to photograph some of these irregularities at extreme angles so that the light will reveal more about them. Seen head on at normal viewing distance they are not nearly as obvious. If you're interested in the painting for the subject matter, it might not be a problem. If you're a dealer adding to your inventory, you might want to consider some restoration work. There is protective foamboard behind the painting which might facilitate shipping somewhat (just protective, canvas is NOT laid on the foamboard). Due to the large size, ask me about shipping quotes. .
