This is a delicate watercolor drawing, of a young lady wearing a sun bonnet and satiny clothing of the upper class extending a branch to a spring lamb seen at lower right, measuring 15" by 10 1/2" (21 1/2" by 18" as ornately framed), and signed at lower right by the artist, French late 19th century academic painter JULES GIRARDET (1856-circa 1946). Girardet was a student of Cabanel and painted many works in the classical academic tradition. Oils have brought to the $40,000 area at Christie's and Sotheby's auctions. Subject matter can be historical, genre and landscape. Not a lot seems to be known about the artist's life, but the detailed work he left behind is his legacy. This example, fresh from a Santa Barbara area estate, is in excellent condition, with perhaps only a small fox spot on the paper at extreme upper left corner. Note the use of fine pencil outlining underneath the watercolor. The gold frame has a small chip at upper left but is in generally very good condition. Shipping wizard figures are guesstimates.
