Oil on board painting, dated on a label on the reverse 1969, showing a woodcock in flight over a marshy forested area, signed at lower right in red "Smallwood", measuring 19 1/2" by 25 1/2" (26" by 32" as framed). This is a work by American sporting artist KENNETH SMALLWOOD, who for a period of thirty years was represented by Crossroads of Sport, Inc. Smallwood painted scenes with pheasant and other game birds in rural landscapes, as well as fly fishing scenes in eastern Canadian rivers, in the style of Ogden Pleissner or Aiden Lassell Ripley. Works by Smallwood have sold at decoy and sporting auctions in recent years to $2,500. He is quite underrated currently and there is little biographical material available but that will probably change as the work is excellent. This painting came out of a Beverly Hills estate from a prominent local family. I also acquired other duck type art from this estate which is now in my shop. Shipping wizard figures are guesstimates.
