Marine art PAIR of ink and gouache drawings of clipper ships signed and dated
To be sold together as a PAIR, here are two ink and gouache drawings of clipper style ships known as barques, each measuring 12 1/2" by 17 3/8" (21 1/2" by 26 3/4" as framed). One is signed "John M. Gorrie" and the other is also signed by the artist and dated 1956. I don't see a listing for this talented artist. On the reverse is written on one "The Four Masted Barque Herzogin Cecilie"/formerly North German Lloyd Training Ship", and on the second work on reverse label is written "4 Masted Barque Pommern". So, both are German late 19th/early 20th century identifiable ships. From Wikipedia: "Herzogin Cecilie was a German four mast barque (Windjammer), named after German Crown Princess Duchess Cecilie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1886–1954), spouse of Crown Prince Wilhelm of Prussia (1882–1951)." The ship was built in 1902 and was out of service by 1936. If you're a nautical art person, a little research will likely go a long way towards learning more about the subjects of these works. Condition is excellent and save for possibly some new acid free clean mats, these are ready for the wall. See other marine art in my shop and HUNDREDS OF OTHER PAINTINGS. Shipping wizard figures are guesstimates.
