SAMUEL R. CHAFFEE (1850-1913) Rhode Island artist watercolor painting of marsh in autumn

Watercolor on heavy paper landscape in the fall, signed lower right "S R Chaffee", measuring 10" by 18 1/2" inside the mat (18 1/4 by 26 3/8" as framed). This is a rather typical work of the listed Rhode Island and southeast Massachusetts painter of the late 19th century, SAMUEL R. CHAFFEE. Chaffee was a prolific artist, often painting in the Hudson River School tradition, nearly all of his extant works being watercolors, a medium in which he was very skilled. Subjects are coastals, marshes, birch trees and other simple yet satisfying landscapes. I rarely see a bad work by the artist; I believe he was quite consistent. Despite the quality of his painting, I believe the market has not properly valued his works, at least not at the present time. This example is in very fresh condition with no foxing nor moisture damage. The frame is simple wood and is quite tired and battered. I have not examined this out of the frame but would be happy to open this upon request. Photos were taken at angles to reduce reflections. Shipping wizard figures are guesstimates.
